SUMMARY:Gertrude Lawrence: A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:The 1930s star of musical comedy Gertrude Lawrence tells her story for the first time from her perspective\, in her own words.  A feisty\, strong woman from Clapham\, Gertie transcended the class ceiling\, forging her stage and screen career into her 50s. The show celebrates her brilliance\, on and off stage\, with pacy dialogue\, which is funny and revealing. Bursting with over 20 songs from London variety and revue to hits by Noel Coward and Kurt Weill. A theatrical cabaret performed by Lucy Stevens with pianist Elizabeth Marcus.  Directed by award-winning cabaret artist Sarah-Louise Young. \nLucy Stevens has cleverly crafted a new vibrant script using Gertrude Lawrence’s auto-biography and letters to tell her story from her own point of view. With songs and storytelling\, Lucy’s performance embodies the spirit of Gertie\, transporting the audience from her childhood in Clapham to London’s swanky nightclubs and the bright lights of Broadway.

SUMMARY:Showman - The Magic of the Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Legendary magician the Great Baldini tells his life story through a series of stage illusions\, from his first trick on his 12th birthday to his career pinnacle rivalling the great Houdini. \nEach chapter is built around a very entertaining\, colourful and theatrical illusion with significant audience participation. Whilst the magic can be a bit hit and miss and Baldini’s old trouper’s spirit is sorely tested the audience is often helpless with laughter as Baldini desperately attempts to hold it together and soldier on. \nThe illusions are excellent (Baldini is an award-winning member of the Magic Circle\, Wessex Magical Association and Bristol Society of Magic). Baldini is an aging trouper\, determined that the show must go on. This adds a level of comedy and theatre beyond a simple magic performance.

SUMMARY:The Maggie Wall
DESCRIPTION:This new play from Martin McCormick was inspired by a monument near Dunning called ‘The Maggie Wall’\, the site of a mysterious grave to a woman tried and executed in the 17th century for witchcraft. It’s a collection of stones about 20 feet high\, bearing the words in white lettering – “Maggie Wall burnt here 1657 as a witch”. \nThe Maggie Wall explores the vulnerability of women and injustices suffered by them in a patriarchal and closed community and resonates with contemporary experiences\, as well as reminding us of a chapter of Scottish and British history in which many people\, predominately women\, were accused\, tried and killed as suspected witches.

SUMMARY:My Doric Diary
DESCRIPTION:It’s December 31st\, 2010\, in Fraserburgh and the eve of Daisy’s 17th birthday. But all is not sparkly at Daisy and Granny’s house. Tempers have erupted\, and a disgruntled Daisy has locked herself away. Daisy is desperate to join her best friend at the New Year’s Eve party in the town’s Leisure Centre\, but Granny will simply not allow it. Granny\, who has raised Daisy since her mother’s death\, wants to continue their usual Hogmanay traditions together instead. \nThere amongst her music and old schoolbooks\, things take a time-bending twist when Daisy is magically transported back to December 31st\, 1993 – the same night 17 years earlier. SUMMARY:Budapest Cafe Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Budapest Cafe Orchestra play a blistering barrage of traditional folk and gypsy-flavoured music from across the Balkans and Russia\, Klezmer laments\, Romanian Doinas\, Hungarian Czadas and their own unique re-imaginings of some of the biggest tunes ever written by the classical greats.  The Budapest Café Orchestra was established in 2009 by British composer and violinist\, Christian Garrick\, and led by him\, have won legions of fans with their magical and infectious performances. \nA small but impeccably formed orchestra of just four players\, the BCO combines violin\, guitar\, accordion\, double bass\, saz & balalaika to dazzling effect\, creating an awesome aural alchemy normally only characteristic of far bigger ensembles. Two of the country’s celebrated international soloists revel at the heart of proceedings. Accordionist exemplar Eddie Hession is a supreme accordion champion of Great Britain. In his illustrious career\, he has accompanied Luciano Pavarotti\, Placido Domingo\, Jose Carreras and Chris Rea.  Christian Garrick is one of the world’s most celebrated jazz violinists. He has played with the likes of Dame Cleo Laine & Sir John Dankworth\, Wynton Marsalis\, Nigel Kennedy\, Bireli Lagrene and Caro Emerald. Another member of the Orchestra is one of Russia’s most enigmatic musical exports. The Sultan is played expertly by Adrian Zolotuhin\, a master of the strummed strings of domra\, balalaika\, guitar and saz.  Veteran bass-man Kelly Cantlon has been in the business of laying down the low notes for many moons. Kelly found fame as a Vagabond with northern soul sensations Jimmy James and the Vagabonds. \nEvoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros\, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires – plus a few surprises along the way – hugely entertaining\, immense skill and profound musicianship\, a show by the BCO is good enough to make you want to book that holiday down the Danube!
