SUMMARY:PIAF
DESCRIPTION:Christine Bovill’s PIAF \nNo glamour. No gimmicks. No pretence. Nothing but a voice\, singing of life’s triumphs and tragedies. Who was Edith Piaf? And how did she come to represent the spirit of Paris like no-one before or since? \nChristine Bovill hated French at school; a fact she was happy to share with anyone who would listen. That is\, until the chance discovery of an Edith Piaf record. This would prove a seminal moment in the life of the 14 year old girl from Glasgow- and set Christine on a fateful path through time into the world of France’s greatest musical icon. \nPIAF\, as much a play as it is a musical homage\, is a funny\, poignant and moving theatrical homage to one of France’s most endearing icons; celebrating some of her best known songs\, threaded with Piaf’s story\, and Christine’s own remarkable journey in the world of chanson. An award-winning songwriter in her own right\, and recipient of Spirit of the Fringe\, Bovill has toured throughout Europe and the Far East with her self-penned homage to the Little Sparrow\, appearing on BBC Newsnight and on BBC Radio 4’s series\, Soul Music. During her Edinburgh Fringe sell-out run at the Famous Speigeltent\, Bovill realised a lifelong dream when she shared the stage with Charles Dumont\, great friend of Piaf and\, most famously\, composer of Non\, Je ne Regrette Rien. They performed several songs together to close the show. PIAF was awarded the Fringe laurels for Total Sell Out Show 2011 and 2012. It received 5 STAR reviews from some of the most respected publications (including The Scotsman). Despite the sorrow of Piaf’s story\, this is an evening of celebration – a tale of human triumph over tragedy; and\, at its heart\, a unique performance by a woman widely regarded as one of the finest interpreters of French Song.

SUMMARY:Mettle
DESCRIPTION:METTLE is a true story. \nIt is a celebration of a man and his wartime service on one of the most infamous Atlantic convoys of World War Two. \nIt is also an observation of a past generation who\, although quietly wrestling with their demons\, remained silent about their service for many years. \nFrom his childhood in Sheffield in the 1960’s\, through to the present day\, award-winning solo performer Nicholas Collett takes us on an epic journey\, retracing his father’s steps\, from Liverpool to the USA and back\, via Sierra Leone and Nova Scotia\, reliving the utter terror of U-boat attacks\, the storm-tossed ocean\, along with the lighter moments of serving aboard a wartime destroyer – including a close encounter with Glenn Miller – in a captivating and physical solo performance. \nA tale of love and loss\, both moving and funny\, above all life-affirming and a paean to those we miss most. \n \nWritten and performed by Nicholas Collett\nDirected by Gavin Robertson\nWith support from the Daparian Foundation and the V&W Destroyers Association.

SUMMARY:The Knitting Pilgrim
DESCRIPTION:A top Fringe Pick at three festivals and performed 85+ times across Ontario\, the Maritimes\, in Austria\, Germany and the US\, this must-see one-man interdisciplinary show & talkback has played in theatres\, museums\, places of worship\, and community centres. Kirk Dunn knits by three huge projection screens and recounts his story as an actor\, writer\, knitter\, and preacher’s kid. \nPrompted by 9/11\, he decided to knit three tapestries\, designed as stained-glass windows\, exploring the commonalities and conflicts of the Abrahamic faiths. The project took him fifteen years to complete. In a show that’s all about knitting and not about knitting at all\, Kirk looks at the rise of Islamophobia\, anti-Semitism\, and fear of the other\, and shares his journey knitting the tapestries: artistic self-doubt\, financial despair\, and the value of a loving partner who is willing to be a butt-kicking muse. \nYou’ll laugh\, cry\, and even do some knitting yourself while Kirk celebrates diversity and concludes that the three faiths have the same goal: peace. When he pulls down the screens revealing the one-of-a-kind work\, you’re invited to come close and engage in conversation that will leave you feeling connected\, inspired and having participated in an evening unlike any other. \nAnd don’t forget to #BYOK – Bring Your Own Knitting. Knitting during the show is encouraged! But if you are not a knitter\, you will love the show just as much as the knitters will.

SUMMARY:Miss Nobodies
DESCRIPTION:A century of women’s stories brought to life by Black Liver; nominated Best Comedy\, Best New Writing\, Best Production; ‘Highly recommended’ (Buxton Fringe). \nYou’re in an ironmongers shop in Britain in 1919; then\, as you look around\, 100 years pass by. Let Ruth Cockburn and Keith Carter take you through a century of stories; the talkie movies of the ‘20s and the video nasties of the 80’s\, the start of 50’s Skiffle and the birth of 90’s Britpop\, class struggles in the ‘60’s and racial tension in the ‘70’s. Playing a host of characters\, from the tragic to the comical to the lyrical and the animal\, their stories\, sketches\, songs and verse\, (there’s even a prize-winning competition in the interval)\, will have you laughing\, crying and singing up to the present day. \nThis two-hander play takes us through the history of the last 100 years in a shop in a Lancashire town. This funny\, poignant and heart-warming story will resonate with all ages and will make you think about what the next 100 years will hold for us. Miss Nobodies was inspired by outreach done online and in the community of Great Harwood alongside research into local history and prominent figures of Lancashire. One such person is Ethel Carnie Holdsworth. A writer that worked in the mills in the early part of the last century. She is cited as the first working-class\, female novelist in the UK and parts of her poetry are used throughout the play to punctuate the story. The show mixes poetry\, storytelling and music\, to tell the story of a local shop spanning 100 years from 1919 to present day. Telling of the women that have made up the shop’s history\, whilst also showing how the lives of women have changed over the last century. \n  \nDirected by Debs Newbold
