SUMMARY:Deiseil: Dancing in Time (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:Deiseil: Dancing in Time is a powerful exploration of how stepdance\, Scotland’s percussive dance\, was lost… and how its revival became woven into a lifelong friendship. Experience a compelling journey across centuries of tradition told through fiddle\, feet\, Gaelic song and story\, in an immersive performance which draws you in to the heart of our heritage.  \nDeiseil means “ready” in Scottish Gaelic : be ready for a mesmerising reflection on how issues of culture\, identity and connection still resonate through society today. Groundbreaking new work from award-winning director Gerry Mulgrew (six Fringe Firsts)\, dancer Alison Carlyle and musician Amy Geddes.  \nThe show is a collage of live music\, dance\, song\, spoken word and recorded material.  \ndeiseil /dʲeʃal/ (sounds like jay-shal).

SUMMARY:Allison Lupton Trio (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised on a second-generation dairy farm in rural Ontario\, Allison Lupton has always been immersed in Canadian folk life\, but it took a love and intense study of Irish and Celtic music for her to find her way to the Canadian folk music tradition that she has grown up around.  Her newest album\, “Words of Love” showcases her original material\, songs which fit so perfectly into the cannon of Canadian folk music that they could easily be mistaken for traditional numbers.  Along with her band mates Andrew Collins\, Shane Cook\, Tony McManus and Joseph Phillips\, Allison brings to life the best of the contemporary folk music scene in Ontario\, while incorporating the Celtic influences that have been such an important part of the Canadian immigrant story as well as her own musical path. \nAfter working with various bands and groups including Killiecrankie\, which was regularly heard on CBC Radio’s legendary Max Ferguson Show\, Allison began releasing music under her own name in 2001 with her debut album “My True Love”.  The album launched her solo career\, performing across Canada\, the United States\, and the UK.  She has since recorded 3 solo albums and been featured on CBC Radio’s Vinyl Café and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. Allison is a frequent collaborator with other artists\, releasing singles with The Young’uns (The Eve of Christmas Day)\, Craig Werth (When Trouble Comes) and the album “So Lucky” with Tannis Slimmon and Rosemary Phelan. She has also been featured as a soloist with The International\, Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge Symphony Orchestras. \nAllison is a multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards nominee for “Traditional Singer of the Year” and “Vocal Group of the Year” as well as Folk Music Ontario’s “Songs From the Heart” grand prize winner for “One More Day”.  With her new album\, “Words of Love”\, Lupton can count herself securely among Canadian folk music’s finest contributors.

SUMMARY:PIAF (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:Christine Bovill’s PIAF \nNo glamour. No gimmicks. No pretence. Nothing but a voice\, singing of life’s triumphs and tragedies. Who was Edith Piaf? And how did she come to represent the spirit of Paris like no-one before or since? \nChristine Bovill hated French at school; a fact she was happy to share with anyone who would listen. That is\, until the chance discovery of an Edith Piaf record. This would prove a seminal moment in the life of the 14 year old girl from Glasgow- and set Christine on a fateful path through time into the world of France’s greatest musical icon. \nPIAF\, as much a play as it is a musical homage\, is a funny\, poignant and moving theatrical homage to one of France’s most endearing icons; celebrating some of her best known songs\, threaded with Piaf’s story\, and Christine’s own remarkable journey in the world of chanson. An award-winning songwriter in her own right\, and recipient of Spirit of the Fringe\, Bovill has toured throughout Europe and the Far East with her self-penned homage to the Little Sparrow\, appearing on BBC Newsnight and on BBC Radio 4’s series\, Soul Music. During her Edinburgh Fringe sell-out run at the Famous Speigeltent\, Bovill realised a lifelong dream when she shared the stage with Charles Dumont\, great friend of Piaf and\, most famously\, composer of Non\, Je ne Regrette Rien. They performed several songs together to close the show. PIAF was awarded the Fringe laurels for Total Sell Out Show 2011 and 2012. It received 5 STAR reviews from some of the most respected publications (including The Scotsman). Despite the sorrow of Piaf’s story\, this is an evening of celebration – a tale of human triumph over tragedy; and\, at its heart\, a unique performance by a woman widely regarded as one of the finest interpreters of French Song.

SUMMARY:Mettle (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:METTLE is a true story. \nIt is a celebration of a man and his wartime service on one of the most infamous Atlantic convoys of World War Two. \nIt is also an observation of a past generation who\, although quietly wrestling with their demons\, remained silent about their service for many years. \nFrom his childhood in Sheffield in the 1960’s\, through to the present day\, award-winning solo performer Nicholas Collett takes us on an epic journey\, retracing his father’s steps\, from Liverpool to the USA and back\, via Sierra Leone and Nova Scotia\, reliving the utter terror of U-boat attacks\, the storm-tossed ocean\, along with the lighter moments of serving aboard a wartime destroyer – including a close encounter with Glenn Miller – in a captivating and physical solo performance. \nA tale of love and loss\, both moving and funny\, above all life-affirming and a paean to those we miss most. \n \nWritten and performed by Nicholas Collett\nDirected by Gavin Robertson\nWith support from the Daparian Foundation and the V&W Destroyers Association.

SUMMARY:West My Friend (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:In the modern musical landscape\, it’s rare to hear something as put-together as Cascadian folk duo West My Friend – something so layered\, deeply symphonic\, baroque\, and mysterious in its own winking way while still courting an edge of disaster. Simple is safe\, but complex is fiery\, intricate\, and ultimately more rewarding. \nSteeped in the visual styles of western Canada\, West My Friend are veterans of the Victoria music scene and recently released their Independent Music Awards-nominated fourth album “In Constellation”. On this latest work\, they continue to refine the art of creating achingly poignant folk music\, only this time\, they’re backed by a full symphony orchestra\, heavily layered while remaining lighthearted. Intricate yet accessible. Melancholic yet optimistic. \nMingling grassroots guitar\, accordion\, mandolin\, orchestral instruments\, and interweaving harmonies\, In Constellation (produced by Joby Baker\, co-produced and arranged by Adrian Dolan) is punctuated by musings on anxiety and belonging. Song structures vary and dynamics change from moment to moment\, painting powerful lyrical portraits over backgrounds of violins and trumpets that swell\, collapse\, and tumble between bold harmonies. With over 800 performances and countless tours under their belt\, West My Friend is bringing forth a new sound you’ve never known you’ve wanted and new meaning to the things you’ve never known you needed. \nGuitar\, Vocals / Eden Poynter \nAccordion\, Vocals / Jeff Poynter \n

SUMMARY:Hebridean Treasure: Lost & Found (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:Hebridean Treasure: Lost & Found captivatingly blends song\, dance and storytelling with live Scottish and South Asian music to conjure up the landscapes of the ancient Scottish Isles and the inhabitants’ deep connection with the rhythms of nature. A universal story of exile\, suffering and the loss of age-old wisdom\, the piece moves through grief and tragedy to bring a message of hope for a new way of life that cherishes our Celtic cultural heritage. \nThe words of John Phillip Newell and the music of critically acclaimed composer and Gaelic singer Mischa Macpherson weave around the compelling performance of Bharatanatyam dancer Kirsten Newell as they invite you into a world that was once lost but is being found once again. \nThe production is based on the work of Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912)\, a Scottish folklorist whose writings and data were brought together in the Carmina Gadelica\, a compendium of prayers\, hymns\, and folklore gathered from the Gaelic-speaking regions between 1860 and 1909. \nThe use of Bharatanatyam dance\, oral storytelling\, songs in Gaelic\, Tamil and Hindi\, and the combination of Celtic and Carnatic music\, reflects the many parallels between ancient Celtic and Vedic culture\, not only with regard to language but also the similarities in social and folk customs\, mythology and traditional musical form. \n  \nPhoto credit: Mark Richards-AuroraFindhorn

SUMMARY:Gertrude Lawrence: A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening (Relaxed Performance)
DESCRIPTION:The 1930s star of musical comedy Gertrude Lawrence tells her story for the first time from her perspective\, in her own words.  A feisty\, strong woman from Clapham\, Gertie transcended the class ceiling\, forging her stage and screen career into her 50s. The show celebrates her brilliance\, on and off stage\, with pacy dialogue\, which is funny and revealing. Bursting with over 20 songs from London variety and revue to hits by Noel Coward and Kurt Weill. A theatrical cabaret performed by Lucy Stevens with pianist Elizabeth Marcus.  Directed by award-winning cabaret artist Sarah-Louise Young. \nLucy Stevens has cleverly crafted a new vibrant script using Gertrude Lawrence’s auto-biography and letters to tell her story from her own point of view. With songs and storytelling\, Lucy’s performance embodies the spirit of Gertie\, transporting the audience from her childhood in Clapham to London’s swanky nightclubs and the bright lights of Broadway.
